The Family Photo Project

The Family Photo Project is an inquiry into our society’s most central unit: the family. Who is your family? What do they mean to you? What happens when your family doesn't look as society tells you it should? What does it mean to be a family living on the north, south, or west side of Chicago? A Latino or a black family? A family of immigrants or refugees? An LGBTQ family? A child free family? We believe that families can take many forms; there is no "one size fits all" mold. We want to celebrate and bring light to that diversity!

We also want to provide an artistic service that we feel is lacking for families with low economic means. That is why we are offering professional family portraits for 3 to 5 families over the course of 2021, free of charge. Each family will be able to choose their favorite portrait to be framed and installed in their home. Throughout the process, we hope to learn more about our partner families- their life experiences, what family means to them, how they ended up living in Chicago, and what life in their neighborhood is like.

Community Gallery Event*

Once the family portraits are completed, we will host a celebratory community event in the fall. There, the portraits will be displayed and family partners can share their experiences about what it's like to live in their specific neighborhood and what family means to them. Partner families can invite their friends and networks.

Guests will have a chance to see the portraits and get to know Chicagoans from different walks of life. The goal of this project is not only to bring fine art to the homes of partner families, but to also engage them in a way that builds lasting community  bonds across neighborhoods. How well do we know our neighbors? How different are their life experiences to our own? What can we learn from each other?
